Title Long-term outcomes of infants with birthweights under 500 g: a nationwide cohort study

Background Recent advances in perinatal and neonatal care improved survival of periviable infants. In our previous study, we evaluated the short-term survival and early morbidities of Korean infants born under 500 g. Until now, there are only a few studies reporting long-term outcomes of infants with less than 500 g birth weight (BW).
Aim / Hypothesis As a follow up study, we aim to investigate long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of the surviving infants with BWs under 500 g.
Inclusion Criteria Infants born with BWs under 500 g during January 2013 through December 2017.
Exclusion Criteria Infants with chromosomal defects or major congenital anomalies, follow up losses
Study Design Statistical methods We plan to evaluate long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants with BWs under 500 g. Perinatal and short-term neonatal outcome factors which contribute to survival and neurodevelopmental outcomes will be analyzed. Subgroup analyses by gestational age and BW will be performed. Moreover, we seek to compare the outcome variables of infants with BWS under 500 g with that of ELBW infants. Statistical methods: 1. Chi-square test for categorical variables 2. Student’s t-test or Mann-Whitney U test for continuous variables 3. Multivariate logistic or linear regression model
Primary Outcomes Neurodevelopmental outcome (cerebral palsy, hearing loss, blindness, BSID-II/III, K-DST, K-ASQ)
Secondary Outcomes and Definitions Anthropometric parameters (weight, height, head circumference), cause of rehospitalization, hypertension
Protocols Retrospective cohort study
Funding None
