Background | Postnatal corticosteroids are commonly used in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants to prevent or treat bronchopulmonary dysplasia. However, postnatal corticosteroids are also known to have adverse effects on long term neurodevelopment in preterm infants. |
Aim / Hypothesis | Aim : The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of postnatal corticosteroid on cognitive development in VLBW preterm infants registered in Korean Neonatal Network (KNN). Hypothesis : Postnatal cortisteroids have long term effects on cognitive development in very low birth weight preterm infants. |
Inclusion Criteria | VLBW (birth weight <1,500 gram) infants with GA <32 weeks registered in KNN. |
Exclusion Criteria | Infants with congenital anomaly |
Study Design Statistical methods | 1) Study Design : Comparison of cognitive developmental outcomes at 18-24 months corrected age between VLBW preterm infants who have received postnatal corticosteroid treatment and who have not. 2) Statistical Methods : statistical analyses will be performed by SPSS (t-test, chi-square test, multivariate logistic regression) |
Primary Outcomes | Cognitive developmental outcomes(Cognitive scores of Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III at CA 18-24 months) |
Secondary Outcomes and Definitions | Cerebral palsy, hearing loss, blindness |
Protocols | Retrospective case control study |
